We are very excited and proud to propose our first Grant proposal. This grant is for specifying an Open-Source gateway to use existing IoT devices and platforms with the Factom® blockchain.

The objectives are:
- Produce a specification analysis for a secure blockchain-enabled IoT gateway;
- Define and document a real-life use case using an existing IoT project;

As required by document 153 that governs Factom grant round 2019-01: This is the thread for grant proposal FACTOM-GRANT-STAMP-IT 001. The review process starts at 2019-01-31 00:00, so please refrain from starting public review or questions before that time. If you notice clear errors in the proposal you can contact the author of the grant proposal directly.

GRANT PROPOSAL EDITED 2019-01-31
Just forgot the "indemnification and waiver" part in the proposition.

GRANT PROPOSAL EDITED 2019-02-07
Split the project into 2 distinct phases: 1- Specification and use case 2- Open source IoT gateway development and PoC

Thank you for your proposal.

This is a generic question I ask in each grant thread.
This is currently the 3rd grant round. I consider that one of the very important criterion to select a grant (apart from its potential value) is the capacity of the grantee to deliver in time what it pledged. Therefore past grants can be used as an indicator.

If you did receive grants in previous rounds, could you please fill the following fields? This would increase transparency and help the standing parties to select grants.

- Have you, or one of your partners, previously received grants : Yes/No. If No, then you can stop here :)
- List of grants received : grant X1 from round Y1, grant X2 from round Y2...
- Status for each grant : grant X1/Still ongoing or Completed, grant X2/....
- Description of the work accomplished so far and Links supporting it : Discord Group/Factomize thread/Github/Reports/...
- Description of the residual work to be completed : XXXXXX

Thank you for your cooperation.

This is our first Grant :)

Very cool. IOT is huge and people really overlook how insecure so much of the IOT infrastructure we have is. That tends to happen with limitless possibilities and very fast innovation in a short time period. Creating proper use models for IOT is a cool idea.

Have you talked much with factom inc about their experience with IOT for DHS, and what can be shared publicly from that? Thanks.

Thanks for your interest! Good question, we have not talked yet with Factom Inc but it's the plan for the first phase. The objective is to gather all information available and the IoT camera project of Factom Inc should certainly be discussed (if possible or with a NDA).

Why not make it the plan before the first phase and this grant? If anyone can shed light on this it's Factom Inc so that would give you a lot of insights on the viability of this project.

We are very confident on the viability of this project considering several years of experience of the team in the IoT world. We propose this grant because we have already identified Factom as a real potential blockchain to address IoT requirements. Factom inc could provide insights for the initial analysis with several other sources.

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for your application.

I have a generic question I am asking of most ANO applicants:

Assuming the grant is funded please break down what will be delivered by this grant proposal funding and what will be delivered by your ANO efficiency set at 50% over the next 3 months?

I also have a specific question:

Which IOT device hardware will you be connecting initially to the gateway (Azure IOT hub) as part of your Proof of Concept?

The project looks promising - we'd love you to get some input from Factom Inc and TFA who are both working on IoT projects too.

Also, can we please have some assurances about the exchange you will be using to liquidate given recent experience?

Thank you for application @Stamp-IT.
Infrastructure projects are extremely important for improving the protocol and increasing its usage.

Although I like the idea you suggested to fund, I think you should work out the project better: few entities (TFA & Inc) has been working on IoT integrations on the Factom blockchain. I think you should use some of their experience in your work to reduce costs of development.

In this case we would support this grant in this high-competitive round (or in any future rounds).

Hi Collin, we are planning to mitigate the USD risk using half Bittrex as suggested by Thor and half Bitstamp. Hopefully the owner of these exchanges won't die during our process of cashing out this time around.

Hi guys, I spoke with 2 members of TFA. What I have been told is that

1. They did look at the project and that our implementation is not similar to theirs, they don't see overlap.
2. At first glance they didn't see a problem with ours.
3. They don't have the bandwidth currently for a collaboration on this matter.

I also asked Paul to comment on our approach and he said he would. Not sure when tho.

As a side note, I know this grant round is over subscribed but I also believe that good libs will help and speed up adoption one way or an other and IoT is in my mind a good segment where Factom could/will shine and bring good usage.

I'm curious how did this project/grant come to light? The best solutions are developed based on existing problems, not based on imagination and that would be cool thinking. Like the DHS project with Factom INC, they've been working hand in hand for a few years to build a solution that solves DHS IOT problems. Rather than build a solution that seems needed then go for "clients"?

You want to make this a success, you work on this project hand in hand with companies who need it. Offer it for "free" for those first clients but at least you'll ensure that you're building something needed and useful.

We understand that the current grant round is a high-competitive one. We also really think that a IoT gateway is a promising way to increase factoids using and develop new market for Factom. So at this time :
- We have an IoT partners with world class specialists - NSim Technologies;
- We have a private partner ready to develop the IoT-Blockchain use case but we cannot reveal more information for now;
- We need to modelize and analyze how to integrate IoT devices, identity and data into Factom and determine the technical specifications for IoT gateway;
- We need a full IoT Gateway with a PoC for the community;
- We consider that it's important to begin to address the IoT topics for Factom in the context of the IoT global market now.

Considering that the IoT gateway and the PoC will need significant work, than actually planned, to provide a fully well tested gateway, we decide to split the grant into 2 distinct phases:
1- This round will address the model, requirements and a real-life use case specification to define the IoT Gateway;
2- In the next round, we will present a complete IoT gateway development grant WITH our private partner to implement the use case already defined. This will give us enough time to finalize the agreement, and to define more precisely all phases of development and not just address a first initial development step.

The proposition will be amended in the original post.

Thanks everyone for your comments and support, it's appreciated.

Hi @Julian Fletcher-Taylor

Yes, everything that is going to be produced in regards to this grant will be open-sourced and public. We are confident that what is going to be produced will help other interested parties to bootstrap their IoT projects.

We reduced the scope of this grant round and divided it in 2 phases in the hopes that we can start this open source IoT gateway as soon as possible having in mind to onboard our first clients (with NSim tech) down the line.
